Vitamin B6 Supplements: Benefits, Dosage and Safety
Vitamin B6 supplements are rarely needed, since deficiency is uncommon. B6 has some evidence for pregnancy nausea and PMS. The bigger concern is excess: long-term high doses, sometimes hidden in energy and B-complex products, can cause nerve damage.
Evidence at a glance
| Use | Grade | What the research shows |
|---|---|---|
| Nausea in pregnancy | B | Used with doxylamine under medical advice. |
| PMS symptoms | C | Some small trials. |
A: strong, consistent human evidence ยท B: moderate ยท C: limited or mixed ยท D: good evidence of no benefit.
Vitamin B6 helps the body use protein and make neurotransmitters.
How to take it
Check the total B6 in all products; many B-complex and 'energy' supplements contain far more than you need. Our label decoder flags high doses.
Safety and interactions
Numbness and tingling in hands and feet can occur with high doses over time. Stop and see a doctor if this happens.
Always tell your doctor and pharmacist about the supplements you take. Check combinations with our interaction checker.
