Creatine Monohydrate vs HCl: Is the Expensive Form Worth It?

Quick answer

Creatine monohydrate is the form used in nearly all research and the cheapest per gram. Creatine HCl dissolves more easily in water, but there's no strong evidence that it builds more strength or muscle, or that a smaller dose works as well. Most people should choose monohydrate; HCl is an option if monohydrate upsets your stomach.

Creatine is one of the best-supported sports supplements. Once you decide to take it, the next question is usually which form. Creatine monohydrate vs HCl is the most common comparison.

Side-by-side

Creatine monohydrate Creatine HCl
Research base Hundreds of studies A handful of small studies
Typical dose 3โ€“5 g a day Often 1โ€“2 g on labels
Solubility in water Moderate (micronized is better) High
Cost per gram Low Several times higher
Proven to increase muscle creatine Yes Less data

Does HCl work better?

HCl's selling point is solubility: it dissolves more easily, so brands claim it absorbs better and needs a smaller dose. Better solubility in a glass of water doesn't mean more creatine reaches your muscles, and the "smaller dose" claim hasn't been confirmed in good trials.

Small studies comparing the two alongside resistance training have generally found similar improvements in strength and body composition when doses were comparable. None have shown HCl to be superior.

Bloating and stomach upset

Creatine draws water into muscle cells, which adds 1โ€“2 kg early on. That's not gut bloating. Some people do get stomach upset from large single doses of monohydrate. Fixes:

  • Take 3โ€“5 g a day instead of loading
  • Split the dose and take it with meals
  • Try micronized monohydrate, which mixes more easily

The verdict

For almost everyone, creatine monohydrate is the better buy: proven, effective and cheap. Creatine HCl isn't harmful, but you pay more for benefits that haven't been shown. Use our creatine calculator for your dose, and read how much creatine per day for timing and loading.

Frequently asked questions

Does creatine HCl cause less bloating?

That's a common claim, but it hasn't been well tested. Any water gain from creatine happens inside muscle, which isn't true bloating. Stomach upset with monohydrate usually improves with smaller doses taken with food.

Do I need a loading phase with HCl?

Loading is optional with any form; it only speeds up saturation.
